Recent JuCo Commits
South Alabama received two verbals recently from JuCo players according to Rivals.com.
Cristobal Dinham, a 5’9″ 205-pound running back from Independence Community College in Kansas, gave his commitment to the Jags ahead of Wednesday’s signing day for Junior College players. He does not have a rating on the Rivals or Scout networks. He is originally from Lithonia, Georgia.
Another running back that has committed from a JuCo is Justin Jones, a 5’6″ 180-pound running back from Northwest Mississippi Community College. He is originally from Horn Lake, Mississippi and is expected to sign with the Jags on Wednesday as well. Recruiting sites reported that he committed to South Alabama back in the summer.
These two commits are expected to help give the Jaguars depth at the running back position where injuries had left them very thin down the stretch of the 2012 season.
Rivals.com also has another recent commit on the offensive side of the ball. ShaVarez Smith, a 6’2″ 205-pound wide receiver from Dean Junior College in Franklin, Massachusetts shows to have committed on this past Saturday. He has a two-star rating from Rivals and a three-star rating from ESPN. He is listed as having a 4.5 40-yard dash time coming out of high school in McDonough, Georgia.
Smith had received an offer from Charlotte, Ohio and South Carolina. He has good size, hands and route running ability. The coaches hope he can help fill Gabe Loper’s spot as a big, clutch receiver to compliment the other receivers on the field.
Over the next day-and-a-half we will get a good idea of some of the JuCo signees as they can begin signing and sending in their Letter-of-intent’s on Wednesday and will have through January 15th. High School players have to wait until February 6th to begin signing their LOI’s and then have through April 1 to sign.
Jags Pick Up Big Offensive Line Committment This Week
The University of South Alabama added a new verbal commitment this week. David Griffin from Mesa Community College, a left tackle on the offensive line, measure up at 6’7″ and 315-pounds.
Griffin is from Tallahassee, Florida and is described as having quick feet and a strong pass blocker. A former teammate, Tyrell Pearson, is a starting corner back for the Jaguars. Griffin heard how much Pearson likes it in Mobile and Griffin likes the coaches so he gave his verbal commitment to the program.
Griffin also had an offer from Florida Atlantic. Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Utah and South Florida all had interest in Griffin as well.
Griffin is set to graduate in December and will enroll at South Alabama in January. You can see his highlight film here.

The South Alabama Jaguars received their 15th verbal commitment for the 2013 signing class. Caleb Alves a 6’3″ 185-pound Wide Receiver/Safety from Melbourne Florida’s Palm Bay Senior HS. In an interview he said that he committed to the Jags because he liked the area and that the school was on the rise. Alves has not visited campus yes, but has extensively researched the area and the school online and does not plan on visiting any other schools. He said that if the opportunity arose, he would visit just for the experience but he was quoted as saying, “I’m all Jag, I’m happy to be a Jag.”
Alves excels at two sports, Football and basketball. He would like to play both in college if possible as he has played both all his life.
But he also excelled at two positions on the football field. As noted above, he has played both wide receiver and safety in high school. He said he is a receiver, but he would love to play defensive back in college. However, he will play at what ever position will help the team.

South Alabama Recruiting Rankings
Jags ranked 3rd in SBC
South Alabama has made it into the 247sports recruiting ranking list this season. Currently the Jaguars are ranked third in the Sun Belt Conference however it does not reflect some of the latest verbal commitments.
While the Jags recently received their 14th verbal commitment, 247Sports only has eight total commits. The Jags are tied with FIU with six three-star commits.
Overall, the Jags are currently ranked the 80th best recruiting class based on those eight commits. Just to give you an idea who is ranked just above the Jags and within striking distance in the recruiting race, the notable programs are: Stanford 78, Tulsa 77, Boise State 75, Oregon 72 and Arizona State 70.
Lamb possible AJC “Super 11”
Georgia is a fertile recruiting ground and the Jags have a number of commits from the state. Each year the Atlanta Journal Constitution lists their “Super 11” recruits from the state. They have narrowed down the list to 33 and the Jags have one of their recruits in that list. Quarterback Taylor Lamb from Calhoun is one of six quarterbacks on the list. He led the state with 3,638 yards for his Class AA championship team last season.
Jags Receive 14th Verbal For 2013 Signing Class
The Jags received their 14th verbal commitment for the 2013 signing class. Jalen Wells, a 6’4″ 230-pound student-athlete from Dublin, GA is listed as a Tight End via 247Sports and an outside linebacker by Scout.com. He is being recruited as a defensive end by the Jaguars.
Wells first started playing organized football last season as he had previously focused on basketball. He was in Mobile for the South Alabama 7-on-7 tournament and impressed the Jaguar coaching staff with his athleticism.
Furthermore, he competed in the Dublin, GA’s track team with some surprised for a player of his size. He competed in the 5000-meter and the triple jump. The 5000-meter is an event where an athletes endurance is pushed to the brink.
Wells is projected to add 40-pounds or more in the future based on his frame and physical abilities which will surely make him a force to be reckoned with for opposing offenses. He is already rated the 80th best tight end in the country and as a three-star athlete by 247sports. Scout.com rates him 123rd among outside linebackers and as a two-star athlete. Wells caught 29 passes for 600 yards and eight touchdowns last season.
He has garnered some interest by Florida, Georgia, NC State, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech but had not received an offer from them. South Alabama made an offer to him in July and he committed late last week.
The other verbal commits are:

Jags Receive 13th Verbal For 2013 Signing Class
South Alabama has received their 12th verbal commitment for the 2013 signing class. Brandon King from Highland Community College in Kansas has made his intentions known that he will sign with South Alabama at the end of the upcoming season.
King, a native from Alabaster, Alabama was a standout at Thompson High and signed with Highland after his senior season. He is a 6’2″, 212 pound linebacker. He led Highland with 118 total tackles last season with 70 of them being solo and also added six tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble. However this season they are moving him to Safety to take advantage of his size and speed.
“I’ve played linebacker my whole life, but they’ve moved me to safety because of my flexibility,” King said. “I’m 6-2, 210 and I run a 4.36 laser time, so it helps a lot with my mobility when I came play both positions. Safety is a nice transition. It shows that I can cover and I’m good with depth. It helps out and shows that I’m versatile.”
King was impressed with the coaches and the facilities on his recent visit to South Alabama. “I really liked that when I came down all the coaches were there and they seemed really dedicated to building the program,” he said. “I really liked the facilities and how everybody is connected. I felt at home. A lot of schools, when you go on a visit they don’t have every coach there excited about seeing you. Everyone knew me by name when I came in. It’s a nice place to be and it’s a pretty campus. The Senior Bowl is held (in Mobile) every year so you can get a lot of looks from a lot of different (NFL) teams. It’s close to the beach.” He then concluded by saying, “I liked everything about it.”
King was receiving recruiting interest from a few FBS schools such as Northern Illinois, Maryland, Rutgers and Auburn among other schools. But he said he was glad to end the recruiting process so he can focus on the upcoming season and not where he intends to go after the season.
The other verbal commits are:
- Tiquan Lang CB Lowndes GA. 5’8″ 168-lb 73 tackles, 3 int, 1 kick block, 5 KOR for 201yds and 1TD, 6PR for 113yds in 2011.

Jags Receives Verbal From Coveted Defensive End
Fresh on the heels of picking up their 10th verbal commitment, the Jags picked up their 11th verbal of the 2013 signing class. Willie Williams Jr of Sumter County High in Americus Georgia, a 6’2″, 255 pound defensive end gave his verbal commitment to the Jaguars. Alabama, Georgia, UCLA and Arkansas were all recruiting Williams.
“This football team is very, very good,” Williams said. “I really like the coaching staff and I think it’s a real good program. It’s a good school and I believe I’ll get a good education.”
Williams was attracted to the Jaguars because he would have the opportunity to play right away and because the program was so young.
William’s coach Michael Pollock had very good words to say about his player. “He’s a very athletic defensive end,” Pollock said. “He can play tight end and defensive end, which he does for us, which gives you some idea of what kind of athlete he is. We even feel if he had to that he could play linebacker for us.”
Pollock continues, “His pass-rush skills are extremely good and he does a great job. He’s not a one-dimensional player. He defends the run well too. But he really has a nose for the quarterback on the rush game. I think his feet and his speed are two assets that he has. I believe he could play right away (at South Alabama). He’s played for us since he was a sophomore. I think he has the skills to go in and make an immediate impact for them.”
“He went to Georgia and dominated at their camp earlier this month and they were talking to him heavy,” Pollock said. “I think it’s an opportunity for Willie to go to a place – you know, they have really, really made it a point of emphasis that he is one of the main guys they are wanting. I think he feels that South Alabama really cherishes his abilities and as a person and really wants him there and I think that’s part of why he picked them.”
Coach Bryant Vincent was recruiting Williams. Pollock said that Coach Vincent did a good job of recruiting him. Even though he was getting a lot of looks from SEC schools, Pollock believes that Williams was impressed by South Alabama’s facilities and coaching staff. But most of all he thinks Williams was impressed most of all by the Jaguars interest in having Williams join the program.
Willie Williams Jr highlight reel.

Jags Receive Verbal Commitment From Hoover Standout
Jags add another name to their growing list of verbal commitments for the 2013 signing season. Their ninth and latest high school verbal commit comes from a 5’11” 195-pound Safety from Hoover High School.
Devon Earl has been the starting safety for Hoover since his sophomore season and was selected as the 2012 Birmingham News Hoover Area Athlete of the Year while also being the starting point guard on the basketball team.
Earl had offers from UAB, Troy and Southern Miss. He was also recruited by MTSU, ULL and Georgia State. “I just felt like South would be a better place for me,” he said. “I just really liked the Mobile area. Going down there, the water being there, you just can’t not go there.”
Earl said he liked South Alabama because it’s a new school and he liked their facilities. He liked the coaches and had an enjoyable time working with them in the football camp which made his decision easier. He was also interested in being part of building a tradition at the school.
Earl looks forward to competing for playing time when he gets on campus. “At Hoover, I had to work for my spot,” Earl said. “I played as a sophomore, but I had to work for it just like I would at any other school. I feel like I can work for it and get a spot.”
Hoover High School football coach Josh Niblett had high praises for Earl. “I think the biggest thing with Devon, and he started for us back when he was a sophomore and that’s not easy to do in our program, but to be able to play safety for us, the greatest thing about him is his presence,” Niblett said. “That’s very contagious. He plays with great passion and great energy. He’s a ball hawk and a great tackler, but he’s always where he’s supposed to be. He has a knack for reading the quarterback’s eyes, and he has a knack for being around the ball. Just playing safety isn’t everything. He can return punts and he has great hands.
“I always knew he was going to be a special kid and special player, but he’s just as special off the field as he does on the field. He’s always where he’s supposed to be and doing what he’s supposed to be doing. He’s got a great family, and they’re real close. He’s been raised well and every day he looks for opportunities to get better. He’s such a competitor. I don’t care if we’re doing 7-on-7 or it’s basketball and they’re doing 3-on-3, or 1-on-1, he wants to win. The knowledge that he has of the game is great. You only have to tell him something once and he soaks it up. They got a good one, I can tell you that.”
The other verbal commits are:

Jags get verbal from Hueytown WR Cameron Broadnax
Head Coach Joey Jones received a verbal commitment from Hueytown receiver Cameron Broadnax that he will sign with the Jaguars in early February. Cameron’s measureables are listed as 6’3″ 195lb and runs the 40 in around 4.58 with a 34″ verticle.
Cameron has offers from Middle Tennessee State, Samford, UAB as well as South Alabama. He said that he likes the Jaguars offensive approach and that it is a rising young program. He hopes to play quickly with the Jags.
They Hueytown head coach commented on Cameron saying, “The thing about Cam, he’s real long, he’s a full 6-3, and his leaping ability and his ball skills are phenomenal. A lot of guys are super fast, but they may not have the ball skills to make those types of catches. He is a leaper. That’s his biggest strength – his body awareness and when he twists around he makes some phenomenal catches. I told some guys, there’s nobody who runs routes better than he does or gets off the jam and has his kind of hands and ball skills. Depending on how much depth they have there now, I believe he’s a guy who can plug in there pretty quickly.”
Verbal commitments are non-binding and there is no early signing period for football recruits. Student-Athletes may begin to sign National Letter-of-Intents beginning February 1.
