Lady Jags Fall To FAU In Conference Opener
The South Alabama women’s basketball team dropped their first Sun Belt Conference game on Wednesday 67-56 to Florida Atlantic. The Jags held a six point advantage at halftime, but FAU used two second half surges to rally back and overtake the Lady Jags.
Mansa El led the Jags with 12 points, six assists and five rebounds while going 5-of-13 from the field. Meghan Dunn also scored in double figures with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Ronneka Robertson added six points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Lady Jags.
FAU improved their record to 4-2 overall (1-0 SBC) with the win. The Owls had three players score in double digits with Kimberly Smith leading the way with 19 points.
At halftime, the Jags led 29-22, but with under 16 minutes to go in the game the Owls surged into the lead with a 15-2 run over six minutes. With under 10 minutes to go, Brianna Wright twice brought the Jags within a bucket of cutting the FAU lead down to single digits, but with 7:13 left they pulled out to a 57-41 lead.
The Lady Jags would cut the lead to 10 points at 57-47 but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. FAU would stretch their lead out to 67-48 with less than two minutes remaining, their largest lead of the game and would hold on for the win.
The Lady Jags (5-2, 0-1 SBC) will close out a five-game road swing on Saturday when they play FIU at 4:30pm at the U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Lady Jags Split A Pair Of Games Over The Weekend
The Lady Jags suffered their first loss of the season on Friday when they played Cal State Northridge. Cold shooting lead to the Jags first loss in a 47-40 decision in the opening round of the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic at the Matadome.
The lady Jags shot a season-low 22.1 percent from the field in the game. “It really didn’t matter where the shots were coming from tonight, we just couldn’t score,” Jaguar head coach Rick Pietri said. “You have to give part of the credit to that to Cal State Northridge’s defense. In the second half, we were able to make some adjustments. We attacked them and got some open looks on the perimeter and some plays close to the goal. But we just couldn’t make plays. We were able to cut it to five late in the second half after being down by 12 or 13, and we just couldn’t make that one extra play offensively and (Cal State Northridge) responded. They’re a good team and were picked to win their league for a reason. They’re expected to be in the NCAA tournament. When they had to make a play, their players stepped up and finished. When we had to close the gap more, we just couldn’t finish.”
That dropped the Jaguars record to 4-1 on the season and took on Detroit on Saturday in the consolation game where they bounced back with a 59-56 win.
That win improved the the Jaguars record to 5-1 on the season before the Jaguars open up Sun Belt Conference play at Florida Atlantic on Wednesday.
Mary Nixon’s return to the lineup had an immediate impact for the Jags. She led the way with 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting and was also 6-of-8 at the foul line.
“Mary Nixon clearly is a difference maker for us,” Coach Pietri said. “She sat out the last two games for us and today was available to play and was excellent. She not only does things individually, but her presence has a positive effect on the rest of our group. Mansa El also played very well today and I think she was able to do that because of the presence of Mary on the court. When we are fully stocked, I feel really good about where we are as a team as we move forward.”
The Jags tip-off against Florida Atlantic at 6:05pm Central time.
Lady Jags Basketball To Host Southern Miss Tonight At Mitchell Center
The South Alabama Women’s basketball team will host regional rival and Conference USA foe Southern Miss Friday evening at the Mitchell Center for a 7:05pm tip-off.
The Lady Jags have began the season with a 2-0 start after they picked up a 59-43 win over Tennessee State earlier this week.
Southern Miss enters the game after falling to Hampton back on November 9 in it’s season opener 78-41.
“The thing that we have to be concerned about is this is a team that beat us last year,” Lady Jaguar head coach Rick Pietri said. “Their backcourt basically killed us last year, Tanecka Carey and Jamierra Faulkner. They put up 26 and 20 (points) on us, and they’re back. We’ve got to find a way to manage them without ignoring the other players on their team who are capable as well. They’re coming off what I’m sure to them was a disappointing loss and they’ve had a whole week to stew about it, which as their next opponent, is something I’m not very excited about.”
“Nonetheless, I know that they’ll be ready to play, and, based on their success versus us last year in a very close game, I know that they’re not going to have any fear of us, so we’re going to have to do the best we can to defend and find ways to score to give ourselves a chance to win.”
Southern Miss leads the all-time series between the two schools 15-10 while coach Rick Pietri is 7-2 against USM in his career. Last season the Jags fell in Hattisburg 67-62. When the Jags and the Golden Eagles last met in MObile, the Jags defeated them 95-61 in the 2010-2011 season.
Lady Jags Defeat Tennessee State 59-43 Monday Night
The South Alabama Lady Jaguar basketball team defeated Tennessee State Monday night at the Mitchell Center. They used a 16-0 run over a five minute span late in the second half to secure the 59-43 win.
South Alabama’s record improves to 2-0 on the season behind a game-high 16 points by Mary Nixon. She shot 5-of-12 and was 2-of-3 from three point range and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Camille Reynolds added nine points, all in the first half. Jennifer Johnson had eight points, six of them during the Jaguars late run. Brianna Wright pulled down 11 rebounds, 10 of the defensive.
“I give a lot of a lot of credit to Tennessee State for making this a really ugly game,” South Alabama Lady Jaguar head coach Rick Pietri said. “It’s coach (Joe) Inman’s 29th year as a coach in Division I, his third program. He’s won conference championships and been to the NCAA Tournament. With this team, he’s decided they are a relentless pressure team. Full-court, half-court, it doesn’t matter. They sell out. They completely sell out under pressure and we struggled with it early. We had 16 turnovers at halftime and that’s not characteristic of our teams and how we play. We were very defensive on offense, and it led to some problems.”
“One of the fortunate things for us is that we guarded them,” Pietri continued. “Even while we were struggling to take care of the ball and struggling to score, we were defending well enough that we could muddle through and still, somehow, be up at halftime. In the second half, we did a better job of managing how they were playing us. We started to make them pay in some areas where they got extended and we were able to make some plays under the goal. We were also able to make some plays beyond the arc. In their frenzied rotation, somebody was left open. Jennifer Johnson hit some big shots for us at one point. In the first half, Camille Reynolds was the one who kept us in the game. She stayed composed while everyone else was losing their minds and she made some big plays for us. We won by 16, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. We are 2-0 and we’re moving forward.”
The Lady Jaguars host Southern Miss on Friday night at the Mitchell Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05pm.
Go Jags!
Lady Jags Win Preseason Exhibition Against West Florida 75-33
The South Alabama Lady Jaguar basketball team defeated West Florida Monday evening at the Mitchell Center 75-33. Junior College transfer Meghan Dunn scored a game-high 20 points off the bench to lead the Jags to the win the preseason exhibition game.
“The things she did out there in the game tonight, she’s also been doing in practice,” lady Jag head coach Rick Pietri said. “The fact that she’s now done those things in practice and in a game gives her the sense of being able to do them every day. She was very good tonight that’s for sure.”
Dunn finished the game 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-9 from the three point arc. Dunn also added three assists and three steals in the win. Mary Nixon added 14 points and lead the team with nine rebounds. Camille Reynolds knocked in 10 points as well. All 12 players on the team saw the court and contributed with 11 of them recording at least two points in the game.
Actually, the Lady Jag reserves had a 43-9 advantage in the game. The Jags were 30-of82 as a team and shot 36.6% from the floor and 28.1% (9-of-32) from three-point range.
“There were some positives and there were some things we needed to work on and that’s what an exhibition provides for you” coach Pietri said. “I wish we would’ve shot it from the perimeter better. Our team is a very good three-point shooting team. By percentage, we weren’t that tonight. We had a bunch of open looks, but we were able to finish some plays too. Defensively, we were solid. We did some good things in team defense. There are some things in team defense we need to work on and the film will show us. West Florida had some opportunities to finish play and didn’t. A better team might have finished those plays. Overall, it was a positive. We just have to build on it for the ones that count.”
With under 12 minutes left in the first half, the Jags held a slim 9-8 lead before they went on a 21-5 run over the next six-and-a-half minutes to break open the game. Two Jaguar freshmen got it started with Sharon Sanders and Brittany Webb each nailing long range shots from the left corner. Dunn then connected on a three-pointer from the right wing to extend the lead to 18-9. Dunn actually was the big spark during the run by scoring 11 of her 20 points during the run while connecting on three three-point shots.
The Lady Jags will open the season on the road against Houston Baptist on Friday. Tip off is set for 7pm.

Lady Jaguars
Coach Rick Pietri is pleased with the progress the Lady Jaguar basketball team has done so far as they have begun practices for the 2012-2013 season.
“I think our first two practices have been good,” Pietri said. “It appears that from top to bottom this group is in good shape from a conditioning standpoint. I believe for the first time since I have been here, we were able to go five-on-five in our closing segments the other day. We’ve shown some promise in terms of things that we could be capable of doing on the offensive end of the floor. We haven’t even talked about defense yet as a team, but we’ll do that towards the end of the week. I do like what I’ve seen from both the veterans and newcomers and after two days of practice, I’m encouraged, but of course there’s a long way to go.”
